October 12 • Cape Town, (B)

Table Mountain, a flat-topped sandstone mountain, graces the cityscape of Cape Town with its imposing presence. Rising approximately 1,085 meters above sea level, it is a remarkable geological masterpiece formed over millions of years. The mountain’s unique plateau, stretching approximately three kilometers from end to end, is a testament to the forces of nature that have shaped this awe-inspiring landmark. Table Mountain has long held deep cultural and historical significance for the local Khoikhoi and San communities, who recognize it as a spiritual place and symbol of their heritage Beyond its striking physical appearance, Table Mountain boasts a rich tapestry of biodiversity.
(note: Table Mountain is weather permitting).
The “Cape of Good Hope”, officially the most south-western point of the African continent, the area was declared a nature reserve in the early 1930’s to protect the endemic “Fynbos” flora and the pristine coastline. At the southernmost point, the land rises steeply to 209 metres above sea level, making for spectacular vistas over False Bay to Hangklip (Hanging Rock). On a clear day one can just make out the lines of Cape Agulhas, 200 km away at the southern-most point of the continent.
At Cape Point, take a funicular ride up to the lighthouse. Enjoy the breathtaking views and a chance to see the cliffs where the two oceans meet. Situated at the junction of Earth’s most contrasting water masses – in 1580 Sir Francis Drake proclaimed it ‘the most-stately thing and the fairest Cape he saw in the whole circumference of the Earth’.
Visit the African Penguin Colony at Boulders Beach. Nestled in a sheltered cove between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, Boulders has become world famous for its thriving colony of African penguins and magnificent wind sheltered beaches. Breakfast at hotel.
Leisurely day to enjoy.
Optional activities: These can be arranged on your behalf at an additional cost. Here's a few ideas.
Robben Island: Robben Island lies 9km from the shores of Cape Town. Once a mark of shame in the history of the land, it is now a symbol of triumph over diversity. A 3.5 hour tour of the museum on Robben Island begins at the Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. After a 30-minute ferry ride, you will tour the former maximum-security jail by former political prisoners, who draw a vivid picture of life in incarceration. In days gone by its proximity to the mainland made it ideal as a leper colony and place of quarantine. Its notoriety peaked in 1960 when the apartheid government used the newly constructed maximum-security section as a political prison. Here leaders of the struggle against racial oppression such as Nelson Mandela and Robert Sibukwe developed their concepts for a post-apartheid South Africa. In recognition, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee marked the island for its “triumph of the human spirit” and declared it a World Heritage site in 1999.
Two Ocean Aquarium: The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans.
Lion Head Hike: It's a fairly easy spiral ascent of 2km, with a bit of climbing near the top using handholds and chains to assist you. As Cape Town's most popular hike, it can get pretty busy – especially around sunset and full moon. Start + end point Signal Hill Drive, at the base of the Forestry Road.
